In the spirit of the challenge and as an extra incentive to participants, the member who finds the first species new to Yorkshire (not new to science in the case of the Yeti) will be awarded the fabled YETI trophy.
In addition the following rules will be adhered to throughout the pan list: -
In addition the following rules will be adhered to throughout the pan list: -
v
All species recorded will be within the
animal, plant, fungus and protist Kingdoms. Bacteria and viruses are not
included within the 2013 pan list.
v
All species need to be seen within vice
counties 61 and 62, East and North Yorkshire.

v
Only species count as ticks, if a species
cannot be correctly identified beyond its genus it will be discounted.
v
It is acceptable to record species where possible by their sound when it can be used to correctly identify them i.e Quail.
v
It doesn’t count if you see it only via television or
digital camera i.e. trail cams.
v
Droppings, pellets and field signs do not
count, the animals themselves need to be seen to be accepted.
v
Dead wildlife doesn’t count. No animals will be killed as part of this project for identification purposes i.e. dissection.
Tracks and signs can't be included but may give an indication of what is about. Water vole skull with characteristic red incisors. |
v
The list will target wildlife. Species being
temporarily kept in captivity can be accepted i.e. moths potted after a
trapping session. Species in long-term captivity (e.g. zoo or farm animals) or
culture (e.g. crops, garden plants) don’t count.
v
All developmental stages count towards a single tick for a given species,
this includes eggs, larvae, pupae, nymphs and of course adults. Likewise seeds and
fruits are also acceptable if they can be identified. Plant galls will also be accepted as a tick, without the need to open them up to see the species responsible.
v
Alien species will be accepted as long as
they are established or are a true unassisted vagrant. Escapees i.e. budgerigar
will not be accepted nor will species of invertebrates which turn up in
supermarket produce or in garden products. Invertebrates which are established
in highly-modified habitats i.e. garden centre greenhouses are still
acceptable. Garden plants which have expanded beyond the boundaries of the
garden and have become established in the "wild" are also acceptable.
v All
species must be recorded directly by at least one of the 2013 pan list team. Species
reported by other people but not seen will not count, however it is acceptable
to include animals found by other people as long as it is seen by a 2013 pan
lister.
